
A homeowner on one of Whitehaven’s Georgian streets noticed a crack developing above their ground-floor bay window. A structural engineer’s inspection revealed that the original red sandstone lintel spanning the bay had fractured under load, causing the masonry above to settle and the crack to propagate upward through two courses of stonework. The engineer recommended immediate temporary support followed by lintel replacement.
The project required support scaffolding to take the weight of the wall above the bay while the failed lintel was removed and a new stone lintel was installed. The bay window itself was ornate — a curved Victorian addition with leaded glass and decorative timber mullions — and had to be protected from any load transfer or debris during the work. This type of structural intervention on Whitehaven’s ageing sandstone townhouses requires precise scaffold engineering and close coordination with the structural engineer throughout.
We erected support scaffolding incorporating a needle-and-shore system that transferred the wall load above the lintel position to temporary supports either side of the bay window opening. The needles were inserted through the masonry above the lintel line, bearing on adjustable props within an independent scaffold frame on the street side.
The independent scaffold also provided a working platform for the stone mason to access the lintel position safely. A protective canopy was fitted over the pavement below the scaffold, as the property fronts directly onto a Whitehaven side street with regular pedestrian traffic. The scaffold design was reviewed and approved by the client’s structural engineer before erection, with calculated load paths and needle positions documented in our method statement.


The fractured lintel was under active load from the masonry above, which meant the support scaffold and needling had to be installed before the lintel could be touched. Any scaffold erection vibration near the cracked lintel risked further displacement. We built the independent frame first, working at a distance from the bay, then inserted the needles carefully through pre-drilled holes above the lintel line and loaded them incrementally using calibrated adjustable props — a controlled process supervised by the structural engineer on site.
The bay window’s leaded glass and decorative timber were protected with plywood boarding before any lintel removal began. Whitehaven’s red sandstone is soft and the mortar surrounding the old lintel was lime-based, which allowed careful extraction without disturbing the surrounding coursework. The replacement lintel — a new Cumbrian red sandstone piece cut to match the original profile — was hoisted into position from the scaffold platform using a manual chain hoist. This type of precise structural support work requires close collaboration between our scaffold team and the project’s structural contractor, which is something we manage routinely across our coverage area.
The support scaffold and needling were installed in one day. The stone mason removed the fractured lintel, prepared the bearing seats, and installed the replacement lintel over three days. The needles were de-stressed gradually under the engineer’s supervision as the new lintel took the load, and the scaffold was struck two days later. The crack above the bay was repointed and the masonry stabilised. The bay window was undamaged, and the homeowner’s insurance claim — supported by our full scaffold documentation — was settled without dispute.
