Scaffold Tower for Gutter Replacement on Semi-Detached House, Dalton-in-Furness

8ft scaffold tower hire enabling safe cast-iron gutter replacement on a 1930s semi-detached house in Dalton-in-Furness.

The Project

A homeowner in Dalton-in-Furness needed to replace the original cast-iron guttering and downpipes on their 1930s semi-detached house. The existing ironwork had corroded through in several places, causing water to cascade down the front wall and saturate the render. A plumber had quoted for the replacement work but needed safe eaves-height access along the full front elevation — approximately 8 metres — to remove the old gutters and fit new cast-iron replacements.

A full scaffold would have been excessive for what was a straightforward linear job at a consistent eaves height of around 2.5 metres. An 8ft scaffold tower was the ideal solution — providing a stable, guardrailed working platform that could be repositioned along the elevation as the plumber worked from one end to the other. This kind of practical, cost-effective tower hire is one of our most popular services across the residential streets of Dalton and the wider Furness area.

Our Solution

We delivered and erected an 8ft scaffold tower on the morning the plumber was due to start. The tower provided a platform height of 2.4 metres — ideal for comfortable working reach to the fascia board and gutter brackets along the full eaves line. Locking castors allowed the plumber to reposition the tower along the front elevation without dismantling, moving it in manageable stages as each gutter section was removed and replaced.

The tower’s compact 1.2m x 2.5m footprint fitted comfortably on the front garden path without blocking the neighbour’s access to their shared driveway. We briefed the plumber on safe tower use — locking all castors before climbing, maintaining three points of contact, and repositioning only from ground level with the platform clear. The tower remained on site for three days and was collected the morning after the plumber finished. A simple, efficient access solution that avoided the cost and time of a full independent scaffold for a job that didn’t need one.

The Challenges

The front garden slopes gently towards the road, so we checked ground levels at each planned tower position and used the adjustable leg jacks to maintain a level platform throughout. The shared driveway between the semi-detached pair is only 2.8 metres wide, which meant the tower could not be wheeled through to the rear — it was used on the front elevation only, with the plumber accessing the shorter rear gutter run from a ladder under our standard safe-use guidance.

The original cast-iron gutters were heavy and the plumber needed to lower each section carefully from the tower platform to avoid dropping ironwork onto the garden below. We supplied a rope and bucket system for lowering fittings safely, which is standard practice on our gutter-height work. Dalton’s 1930s housing stock generates steady demand for this type of eaves-height tower hire — gutters, fascias, soffits and exterior painting are all tasks where a tower is the right tool for the job.

The Result

The full front gutter replacement was completed in two and a half days. Six metres of new cast-iron half-round guttering was fitted with new brackets, outlets and three downpipes. The tower was collected on the morning of day four. Total tower hire cost was a fraction of what a full scaffold would have been, and the plumber commented that the stable platform made the heavy ironwork far easier to handle than working from a ladder. The homeowner now has matching heritage-style cast-iron guttering that complements their 1930s house perfectly.
