
A primary school in Cleator Moor was building a two-storey classroom extension connecting to the existing Victorian school building via a covered walkway. The main contractor needed scaffold access to the junction between the new extension and the original building for brickwork tying-in, render matching and roof connection work. The complication was that the covered walkway beneath the junction was the school’s primary pedestrian route between the main building and the playground — and the work was taking place during term time with 200 children on site daily.
The contractor needed a scaffold solution that bridged over the walkway entirely, providing a stable working platform at first-floor junction height without blocking the children’s route below. Safeguarding, pedestrian management and noise sensitivity were all critical requirements on this commercial scaffold project. Schools in the Cleator Moor area are often Victorian-era buildings where extensions and modernisation work is ongoing, and we have developed considerable experience in delivering scaffold solutions that keep educational facilities operational throughout the works.
We designed a bridging scaffold spanning the full width of the covered walkway, bearing on independent scaffold towers erected either side of the pedestrian route. The bridge beam system supported a continuous working platform at first-floor level, giving the bricklayer and roofer uninterrupted access along the full junction between the new extension and the existing building.
Beneath the bridging section, the walkway remained fully clear with a minimum 2.4-metre headroom for adult and child pedestrian traffic. Protective boarding was fitted to the underside of the bridge platform to prevent any debris falling into the walkway, and high-visibility barriers channelled pedestrians safely beneath the scaffold. All scaffold components at ground level were padded and capped to eliminate any sharp edges at child height — a specific safeguarding requirement from the school’s health and safety officer. Canopy protection was extended along both approach routes to the walkway for additional safety.


Term-time working on a primary school site imposed strict constraints on our erection schedule and working methods. All scaffold erection was carried out during school holidays or at weekends, with no scaffold construction activity permitted during school hours when children were on site. We completed the initial erection over a weekend and returned for adaptations during the half-term break.
The school’s safeguarding policy required all our operatives to hold valid DBS checks before entering the site — a requirement we anticipated and arranged in advance. Noise-generating activities were scheduled for break times and lunchtimes when children were away from the immediate area. The main contractor’s programme required two scaffold adaptations during the project as the extension progressed from blockwork to roof level, and both were completed during non-school periods to avoid any disruption to teaching. The bridging scaffold was in place for eight weeks across the construction phase of the extension junction. The walkway remained open to pupils and staff throughout, with zero safety incidents reported during the entire scaffold period. The bricklayer completed the tie-in between old and new buildings cleanly, and the roofer connected the extension roof to the existing slate roof with matching materials. The scaffold was struck during the Easter holiday, and the children returned to find their new classrooms connected and ready for fitting out. The headteacher wrote to thank us specifically for the care taken around the children’s safety.
